My interest in psychology and counseling stems from my own experience on the couch. I found people who helped me change my life and now I get to be your teammate in growth and change. It's awesome. I studied psychology and received my bachelor's from ASU.
After working a couple of jobs in the psych field (and not) I wasn't feeling fulfilled. After some soul searching I decided to get my master's at Ottawa University. As soon as I started working with clients I knew I had made the right decision for myself. I LOVE what I do. Watching people heal and grow is like nothing else and I am humbled to be part of the journey.
In my sessions I like to combine more traditional therapeutic techniques (like CBT and DBT) with expressive arts. I have found that this allows my clients to further personalize and explore the concepts and skills. This can help make it easier to connect and apply the knowledge into their life outside of therapy.
Expressive arts therapy is a way of letting our creative mind explore and aid in healing. It is important to note that you don't have to "be an artist" to participate in expressive arts therapy. Anyone can do it and it takes many forms! Maybe we will work with paint and markers, or we might use clay, collage, sculpture, writing, poetry, music, photography... the list goes on.
The focus of expressive arts is on the process, not the product. Instead of me looking at your finished piece and telling you what your work means, you will tell me. We can explore thoughts and feelings that come up along the way. The best part (besides that it can be really fun) is that there is no right or wrong. Again, it is a process!
Your sessions are about you. You can expect me to share suggestions, teach skills, and gently challenge you. I will expect you to let me know if you need something specific that day, or if something is/is not working for you. We can always switch things up or find something else that is a better fit.
I want you to feel comfortable in your sessions. Thirsty? Bring a drink. Hungry? Snack away. Want to bring your own markers or a journal? Awesome. I will provide tons of different art supplies and you are welcome to bring your own.
